Klein, Yves
(1928-1962)
   painter
Yves Klein, who was a leading member of the neo-dadist movement and, with others, founded Nouveau Réalisme, was born in Nice. At the beginning of his career he tried to impose an absolutist vision of color, creating monochromatic surfaces (1946) that excluded all other colors except blue. In this mode, he decorated large panels outside of France (the opera at Gelsenkirchen, Germany) and did bas-reliefs in the same shade, using overlaid sponge (Relief-éponge bleue, 1957). This was followed by controversial exhibits in paris (where he mostly worked), including female nudes in blue tones (Anthropométries, 1958-60). These were produced with "living brushes," as he called them, models covered in paint making imprints on canvas. In other works, he used the natural elements, wind and rain, to produce effects (Cosmogonies, 1960) with himself photographed jumping from a window, and burning cardboard, his Peintures de feu. A theorist, Klein tried to integrate a universal symbolism into art as well as humanity into the cosmos (Dépassement de la problématique de l'art, 1959).
